Avinash Kandekar, aged 53, the manager of a cooperative credit society in Kundewadi village, Nashik district, India, has been arrested for his role in the opening of 32 fake accounts by Ashok Kharat, a self-styled godman. The police, led by Inspector Hemantkumar Bhamare, stated that these accounts were opened between August 2016 and October 2023, with transactions totaling over ₹57.90 lakh (approximately $69,500 USD). The fraudulent activities came to light after Narayan Ghotekar filed a police complaint on April 21, discovering that Kharat had opened an account in his name without consent. The investigation revealed that Kharat had opened 31 additional accounts, raising suspicions about Kandekar's knowledge and involvement. Kharat, who has previously been charged with 16 cases of sexual abuse and harassment, was re-arrested in connection with these allegations and is currently in police custody until April 26.
