The Telangana government has decided to implement a 50% salary cut for ministers to generate funds for settling long-standing pension dues owed to retired government employees. This decision follows a similar action taken by the Himachal Pradesh government amid financial difficulties. Information and Public Relations Minister Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy announced that all ministers have voluntarily agreed to this reduction, and public representatives may also forgo half of their salaries if required. The cabinet highlighted that the total liabilities amount to ₹6,200 crore for serving employees and ₹8,000 crore for retirees, indicating a significant financial burden. To expedite the process, the cabinet set a 100-day target to initiate arrangements for clearing these dues and formed a resource mobilisation sub-committee to liaise with employee unions and pensioners. The government expressed concern over the hardships faced by pensioners due to delays in disbursing retirement benefits and emphasized the need for timely payments to avoid forcing retirees to navigate bureaucratic hurdles.
