The first phase of the 2026 assembly elections in West Bengal concluded with a remarkable voter turnout of 92.35%, marking the highest participation since at least 2011. Despite a significant revision of electoral rolls that removed nearly 10% of names, 33.2 million voters cast their ballots, exceeding the turnout from the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. The highest voter engagement was in Murarai, with a turnout of 96.95%, while Mekhliganj recorded the lowest at 82.12%. Both the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) are engaged in a fierce battle for power, with political tensions escalating over the electoral roll revisions. However, many voters faced challenges as only 139 out of 1.4 million appeals to restore their names on the voter list were successful. Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar noted that this phase saw the highest polling percentages recorded in West Bengal and Tamil Nadu since Independence.
