The fraud trial of Dr. Sushil Jain, 81, has brought to light significant financial mismanagement at the South Asian Centre of Windsor, Ontario, Canada. Jain has pleaded not guilty to charges including fraud over $5,000, laundering the proceeds of crime, and possession of property obtained by crime. Windsor police allege that more than $360,000 was misappropriated from the organization over several years. Testimony from Dr. Fazel Baki, the current president of the centre, revealed that the organization’s financial practices were 'sloppy,' which hindered a planned independent audit for May 2023 due to the absence of key bank statements. The defence suggested that Baki held a bias against Jain, which Baki denied, stating that the issues were 'nothing personal.' The trial, presided over by Justice Sharon Murphy, is expected to continue on May 13, with a forensic accountant set to testify. Additionally, a civil lawsuit has been filed by the centre to recover the misappropriated funds, which includes former Windsor city councillor Jeewan Gill as a named defendant.
