The Indian Biogas Association (IBA) has called for a 10% mandatory blending of fermented organic manure with chemical fertilizers by 2030, which could save India approximately $2 billion in annual imports. This proposal was presented in a white paper titled 'FOM Feeds Soil, Soil Feeds Sustainability,' released by Union New & Renewable Energy Secretary Santosh Kumar Sarangi during the BBB Summit 2026 held from May 7 to 9. The IBA emphasizes that India's Soil Organic Carbon (SOC) levels are critically low at about 0.4%, negatively affecting soil fertility and crop productivity. The proposed framework includes integrating fermented organic manure (FOM) into existing government schemes and launching a national program called SuBiCulP (Sustainable Biogas-Organic Fertilizer Based Cultivation Programme) to ensure effective utilization of FOM. The IBA's phased blending obligations aim to gradually increase blending from 1% in 2026-27 to 10% by 2029-30. This initiative is expected to stabilize market demand for fertilizers and promote sustainable agricultural practices across the country.
