This initiative, led by the Haryana State Pollution Control Board (HSPCB) and the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG), aims to curb the illegal distribution of SUP items, particularly unauthorized cutlery used at functions. Akansha Tanwar, the HSPCB’s regional officer, reported that a wholesaler in Udyog Vihar Phase-I was found storing 373 kilograms of SUP, leading to a ₹25,000 penalty and potential blacklisting. Similar fines were imposed on two vendors in Khanda Mandi for stocking an additional 200 kilograms of SUP. The enforcement against SUPs is expected to intensify following a recent review meeting on environmental norms. The seized materials will be sent to a waste-to-energy (WtE) plant in Sonepat. Notably, plastic waste generation in Haryana increased significantly, rising to 38% in 2025 from 27% in 2022-23, with total waste reaching nearly 180,000 tonnes.
