In preparation for the repoll on May 21 in the Falta Assembly constituency of West Bengal, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has significantly enhanced security protocols following allegations of election tampering during the April 29 polls. The deployment of central paramilitary forces has been doubled, with 35 companies now assigned to the area, ensuring that each of the 285 polling stations will be manned by eight personnel from the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) instead of the previous four. Additionally, the ECI is implementing triple-camera webcasting at each booth for the first time, which includes two cameras inside the booth and one outside, aimed at enhancing transparency and monitoring. A fleet of 30 Quick Response Teams will also be on standby for rapid response to any incidents. The heightened security measures come in the wake of a crackdown on local intimidation networks, resulting in several arrests, including that of a local Trinamool Congress (TMC) strongman. Notably, TMC candidate Jahangir Khan withdrew from the race just before the election, a move that has sparked speculation about the political dynamics in the area. These measures reflect the ECI's commitment to ensuring a fair and secure electoral process in Falta.
