Political parties in Karnataka are requesting the Election Commission to extend the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls by one year. They argue that the current timeline is too narrow and could lead to the exclusion of eligible voters, particularly among migrant and nomadic communities.
- 01The SIR process is scheduled to start on June 20, but parties argue for a delay due to the absence of major elections.
- 02Concerns were raised about the reliance on Booth Level Officers (BLOs) for distributing forms, which could result in biased exclusions.
- 03BJP's representative suggested that BLOs should provide photographic evidence of their visits to verify enumeration.
- 04Voter mapping in Bengaluru is notably low, with only 65% coverage compared to over 86% in the rest of Karnataka.
- 05CPI(M) officials criticized the need for fresh documents from voters already verified in the previous SIR exercise.

In Bengaluru, representatives from various political parties have urged the Election Commission (EC) to extend the timeline for the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls by one year. They argue that the current schedule, set to begin on June 20, is insufficient and could lead to wrongful deletions of eligible voters, particularly affecting migrant workers and nomadic communities. Congress spokesperson Ramesh Babu emphasized the need for more time for voters to obtain necessary documents from revenue authorities. Concerns were also raised regarding the exclusive use of Booth Level Officers (BLOs) for distributing enumeration forms, with fears that political bias could result in eligible voters being excluded. Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) representative Darshan Jain highlighted the lack of verification mechanisms for BLO visits, proposing that they upload photographic evidence of their visits to households. While Karnataka has achieved over 86% voter mapping, Bengaluru city lags behind with only about 65% coverage, raising alarms about potential exclusions. CPI(M) office secretary Balakrishna Shetty criticized the EC for requiring fresh documentation from voters verified in the previous SIR exercise, warning that even minor discrepancies could lead to deletions from the electoral rolls.

The proposed extension of the SIR timeline could ensure that more eligible voters, especially from marginalized communities, are included in the electoral rolls, thereby enhancing democratic participation.
