The Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) has commissioned a state-of-the-art X-band dual-polarisation Doppler weather radar at its High Altitude Cloud Physics Laboratory (HACPL) in Mahabaleshwar, Maharashtra, as part of the Centre’s Mission Mausam initiative. Inaugurated by M. Ravichandran, secretary of the Ministry of Earth Sciences, the radar is positioned at an altitude of 1,400 meters in the Western Ghats, an area known for its rapidly changing weather conditions. This advanced system will enhance nowcasting capabilities, allowing for accurate short-term weather forecasts of up to three hours across Pune, Satara, and parts of the Konkan region. It will also provide crucial support for early warnings related to floods and landslides, thereby improving disaster management and agricultural advisories. Additionally, IITM has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) to collaborate on satellite meteorology, focusing on developing advanced weather products and enhancing forecasting accuracy. This partnership aims to improve the understanding of extreme weather events and their impacts.
