In response to the losses faced by farmers in Himachal Pradesh due to erratic weather and hailstorms, the state government is urging them to enroll in the weather-based crop insurance scheme. Jagat Singh Negi, the state's Horticulture and Revenue Minister, announced that teams are currently assessing the extent of damage to apple orchards and other crops. While the exact figures are still being determined, the government aims to raise awareness about the insurance scheme, which currently has only 70,000 of the 2.5 lakh orchardists participating. To incentivize participation, the government has increased the compensation for hailstorm damage from ₹750 to ₹1,500 per tree. Workshops and camps are being organized to inform farmers about the benefits of the scheme and encourage broader participation.
