Wildfires are frequently neglected in global climate resilience discussions, despite their significant impact on greenhouse gas emissions and ecosystems. Annually, wildfires contribute an estimated 2.5-4 billion tonnes of greenhouse gases, while in India, nearly 60% of forests are affected by fire occurrences. The climate crisis is exacerbating the scale and unpredictability of these fires, leading to a feedback loop where warming fuels fires, and fires further contribute to warming. India has committed to restoring 26 million hectares of degraded land by 2030 and creating additional carbon sinks, but large and repeated fires threaten these goals. The country is enhancing its wildfire management systems, including real-time alerts and dedicated control rooms, but the changing climate is outpacing institutional responses. Effective wildfire management should focus on community involvement, planning, and risk reduction rather than solely firefighting. By adopting integrated fire management approaches, India can better prepare for and mitigate the impacts of wildfires, ensuring the protection of its diverse forest ecosystems and climate commitments.
