WestJet Airlines, based in Calgary, Canada, has announced a reduction in flight capacity due to soaring jet fuel prices, which have more than doubled since the onset of the U.S.-Iran conflict. The airline has cut capacity by 1% in April, 3% in May, and nearly 6% in June. Although no routes have been eliminated, WestJet is evaluating its summer schedule for potential further cuts. This decision comes in the wake of Air Canada also suspending six routes due to unprofitable fuel costs. The ongoing conflict, which escalated in February 2026 following U.S.-Israeli strikes on Iran, has led to a shutdown of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical oil transit route, resulting in significant increases in crude oil prices and jet fuel costs. Despite a fragile ceasefire, jet fuel prices remain at over double their prewar levels, prompting airlines to reassess their operations.
