The Income Tax department reported a total collection of ₹20,000 crore (approximately $2.4 billion USD) from Jharkhand and Bihar during the financial year 2025-26. M S Dhoni, the former captain of the Indian cricket team, was recognized as the highest individual taxpayer across both states, with ₹12,000 crore (about $1.4 billion USD) collected from Jharkhand alone. The Principal Chief Commissioner of Income Tax for Bihar and Jharkhand, Dr. D Sudhakara Rao, noted that around 70% of the total collection was obtained through tax deduction at source (TDS). Despite challenges posed by heavy rains affecting mining activities, which impacted tax collection, officials remain optimistic about exceeding the ₹20,000 crore mark in the current financial year. Rao highlighted that only 40 lakh of the 5.5 crore PAN card holders in the two states filed tax returns. The upcoming Income Tax Act, effective from April 1, 2025, aims to simplify compliance and enhance clarity for taxpayers.
