Mahendra Singh Dhoni has emerged as the highest individual taxpayer in Bihar and Jharkhand for the financial year 2025-26, as reported by the Income Tax Department. The total tax collection from both states reached nearly ₹20,000 crore (approximately $2.4 billion USD), with Jharkhand contributing around ₹12,000 crore (roughly $1.44 billion USD). Senior tax officials noted that about 70% of the total collection was derived from tax deducted at source (TDS), underscoring the increasing compliance from salaried taxpayers and corporates. Dhoni, a prominent cricketer and brand endorser based in Ranchi, continues to be a significant contributor to the tax base due to his earnings from cricket, endorsements, and business ventures. The report also highlighted that while Jharkhand's tax contributions are higher due to its mining and industrial activities, there is a notable gap in tax compliance, with only 40 lakh out of 5.5 crore PAN card holders filing income tax returns. Additionally, the Income Tax Department is preparing to implement the new Income Tax Act, 2025, which aims to simplify tax compliance and enhance awareness among taxpayers across the region.
