On Tuesday, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) arrested three individuals, including Vikas alias Vicky Goyal and his son Raghav Goyal, in connection with a ₹20 lakh (roughly $24,000 USD) bribery case involving the Punjab Vigilance Bureau. The arrests occurred after a high-speed chase, while O P Rana, the Reader to the Chief Director of Vigilance, remains at large. The case began after a complaint from a Punjab state tax officer, who alleged that the Goyals demanded the bribe to secure the closure of a pending vigilance complaint against him. The CBI reported that the Goyals acted as intermediaries for Rana, who purportedly assured the complainant that the issue would be resolved upon payment. The bribe amount was later negotiated down to ₹13 lakh, alongside a Samsung Galaxy Z Fold7 mobile phone intended for Rana. A CBI sting operation on May 11 in Chandigarh led to the capture of Ankit Wadhwa, an associate, while accepting the cash and phone. The Goyals and two armed gunmen attempted to flee but were apprehended near Ambala at the Punjab-Haryana border. Searches at the Goyals' residences in Malout and Rana's home in Chandigarh uncovered ₹9 lakh in cash and incriminating documents. The investigation into the broader conspiracy and the involvement of other individuals continues, with the role of Punjab Police gunmen assigned to the accused also under scrutiny.
