Power distribution companies in Delhi have issued a warning regarding the increased risk of electrical fires as summer temperatures rise. The advisory highlights that most fire incidents during peak summer months stem from overloaded circuits, faulty wiring, and poorly maintained appliances, particularly air conditioners (ACs). Discom officials noted that many households use outdated wiring systems, which raises the risk of overheating and fire incidents. They emphasized the importance of regular servicing of AC units and ensuring they are connected to appropriately sized electrical circuits. Additionally, residents are cautioned against overloading sockets and using damaged cords, as these practices can exacerbate fire hazards. The advisory recommends installing earth leakage circuit breakers (ELCBs) or residual current circuit breakers (RCCBs), conducting annual inspections of house wiring, and using ISI-marked electrical equipment. Furthermore, unauthorized construction near high-tension lines and illegal cable installations on electricity poles were flagged as significant safety concerns that could hinder maintenance and increase fire risks.
