The US Navy has announced plans for a new battleship named after former President Donald Trump, which will be powered by nuclear energy. This decision, included in the Navy's 30-year shipbuilding roadmap submitted to Congress, represents a significant shift from conventional propulsion methods used in destroyers and frigates. The battleship is projected to weigh between 30,000 and 40,000 tonnes, making it considerably larger than current destroyers. It will be equipped with experimental weaponry, such as lasers and electromagnetic railguns, which utilize electricity instead of traditional gunpowder. The Navy estimates a budget of $43.5 billion for the first three ships. Naval expert Bryan Clark noted that while nuclear power increases costs, it offers operational advantages, allowing for longer deployments and the ability to maintain high speeds while using power-intensive weapons. Despite these benefits, nuclear-powered ships are more expensive to maintain, and the Navy's shipyards are already under pressure. The timeline for the completion of the first battleship remains uncertain, as the design and builder have yet to be finalized.
