During the inauguration of the Mphasis AI and Robotics Laboratory at Sahyadri College of Engineering and Management in Mangaluru, M.C. Sudhakar, the Minister for Higher Education in Karnataka, stressed the necessity for education to evolve beyond theoretical frameworks. He advocated for a strong emphasis on practical exposure and skill development, particularly in the context of Artificial Intelligence (AI). The laboratory, established in collaboration with the Mphasis Foundation, Karnataka Digital Economy Mission (KDEM), and the NASSCOM Foundation, aims to connect educational institutions with industry needs, providing students with opportunities for innovation and relevant skills. Deepa Nagaraj from Mphasis Foundation highlighted that the laboratory's long-term goals include fostering patents, research publications, and student-led start-ups. She emphasized that modern employers look for individuals who can effectively use AI to address real-world challenges. Additionally, Chetan Dixit from KDEM reaffirmed their dedication to supporting higher education institutions in creating innovation-driven ecosystems. Manjunath Bhandary, chairman of the college, echoed the sentiment that education should not solely focus on placements but also encourage students to become job creators, asserting that while academics serve as a passport, skills are the visa to success.
