During a recent vice chancellors' meet in Ranchi, Sudivya Kumar, the Higher and Technical Education Minister of Jharkhand, announced the government's commitment to keeping state university campuses apolitical. He stressed that the leadership of student unions should be in the hands of genuine students, free from political affiliations. Kumar pointed out that students should voice their concerns, but only those enrolled in the institutions should participate in union activities. He expressed concern over the state's gross enrolment ratio in higher education, which is currently below the national average. One contributing factor to this low ratio is the state's long-term reliance on contractual staff, including need-based teachers, which has affected educational quality. Kumar highlighted that the responsibility for the shortcomings in higher education lies with all stakeholders, including ministers and chancellors, rather than a single individual. The conference also covered a broad range of topics pertinent to the enhancement of state universities, aiming to foster a more conducive environment for genuine student engagement and academic growth.
