On Thursday, teachers at Dyal Singh Evening College in Lodhi Colony, Delhi, organized a protest against the administration's plan to rename the institution to Banda Singh Bahadur, a Sikh warrior. The Staff Association is demanding an immediate meeting with the administration and written assurance that the college will not be relocated from its current site. Mithilesh Kumar Singh, the association president, noted that the renaming issue resurfaced in December 2022 after a decade, when Delhi University Vice Chancellor Yogesh Singh mentioned it during Vir Bal Diwas celebrations. Although the renaming is not on the agenda for the upcoming executive council meeting scheduled for April 29, Singh believes it may be added at the last minute. Professors expressed concerns that the college's name holds significant emotional value and fear that a potential relocation to areas like Narela or Dwarka could negatively impact student admissions due to connectivity issues. The college principal, Bhawna Pandey, did not respond to requests for comment. The protest highlights the importance of teachers as stakeholders in the decision-making process regarding the college's future.
