The Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) has announced a significant change in its regulations regarding the use of stock price data for educational purposes. Starting July 1, 2024, a uniform 30-day lag will be implemented for both sharing and utilizing market data in educational content. This decision comes after feedback indicated that the previous one-day lag was too short and posed risks of misuse, while the three-month lag was too lengthy for educational needs. Sebi had initially restricted live market data sharing in May 2024, allowing only a one-day lag for educational use, which was later tightened to three months in January 2025. Under the new framework, educational institutions can now access market price data with a 30-day delay, streamlining the process while maintaining safeguards against misuse. The National Institute of Securities Markets (NISM) will continue to have access to real-time data with a one-day lag for its simulation lab activities.
