In the lead-up to the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, it has been reported that a majority of the 2,147 detainees in prisons across the state are unwilling to participate in the electoral process. Only 66 detainees have expressed their intention to vote via postal ballot. This low turnout can be attributed to the Representation of the People Act, 1951, which restricts voting rights for those facing criminal cases or in judicial custody. However, those under preventive detention, as defined by various laws, are entitled to vote. Following the election notification, the Tamil Nadu government requested a list of detainees from prison authorities to facilitate the voting process. Prison officials confirmed that detainees have access to newspapers and television, enabling them to stay informed about political developments, although no campaign materials are allowed within the prison. Among the detainees, four out of 47 women expressed a willingness to vote, indicating a slightly higher interest compared to their male counterparts.
