Amazon has announced its acquisition of Globalstar for $11.57 billion, marking a significant move into the satellite-based internet service sector. This acquisition aligns with Amazon's ambitions to enhance its low Earth orbit satellite network, which began with the Amazon Leo program. Currently, Amazon has launched 200 satellites and plans to expand this constellation to over 3,200 satellites by 2029. The deal also ensures that Globalstar continues to support Apple's emergency satellite features on devices such as iPhones and Apple Watches, following Apple's investment of $1.5 billion in Globalstar. As of now, Starlink leads the market with more than 10,000 satellites and serves over nine million users globally, posing a significant challenge for Amazon and Apple in this burgeoning sector.
