Bharat Coking Coal Ltd (BCCL) has suspended coal mining and dispatch operations at its ABOCP mine in Dhanbad, Jharkhand, since around 3 pm on April 2 due to local protests. The company claims the disruption is caused by unorganised local workers demanding full-time wages despite a significant reduction in departmental production needs. BCCL stated that these workers were previously engaged for only 4-5 days a month under an agreement with local authorities, which has become increasingly irrelevant as the need for shale picking and segregation work has decreased. The company reported a 12.3% decline in coal production in FY26, producing 35.5 million tonnes compared to 40.5 million tonnes the previous year. Following the protests, BCCL has reached out to local law enforcement and lodged a formal complaint, escalating the matter to senior officials. The extent of production loss due to the ongoing stoppage has not been disclosed.
