In response to increased demand amid the ongoing conflict in West Asia, the Indian government has ramped up the sale of 5-kg LPG cylinders, selling 6.6 lakh units since March 23, 2023. The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas reported that over 51 lakh domestic LPG cylinders were delivered in a single day, with online bookings accounting for 95% of total demand. The government has assured that there is no shortage of LPG cylinders at distribution points. To combat hoarding and black marketing, authorities have seized more than 50,000 cylinders and issued over 1,400 show-cause notices to distributors, resulting in the suspension of 36 dealerships. Additionally, commercial LPG supplies have been limited to 70% of pre-crisis levels to manage demand effectively. The government continues to prioritize the supply of domestic LPG and piped natural gas for households and critical services, while all refineries operate at high capacity to ensure adequate supply.
