Southern Railway, based in Chennai, India, reported a record passenger traffic of 7.67 lakh for the fiscal year 2025-26, reflecting a 4.9% increase from the previous year's 7.31 lakh. The rise in passenger numbers contributed to a significant boost in ticket-checking revenue, which increased by 30.93% to ₹160.75 crore compared to ₹129.82 crore the previous year. In addition to running special trains, the railway augmented its general second-class coaches by adding 294 more coaches across 198 trains, which played a crucial role in supporting this growth. Freight operations also showed positive results, with a total loading of 42.113 million tonnes, achieving a 1.1% year-on-year growth over last year's 41.670 million tonnes. Freight revenue reached ₹3,841.11 crore, exceeding the target of ₹3,825.83 crore. The parcel segment generated ₹168.64 crore, catering brought in ₹128.12 crore, and parking revenue reached ₹81.5 crore.
