The Maharashtra cyber police have initiated a crackdown on an Instagram trend involving the promotion of fake Indian currency notes (FICN) through reels, leading to the arrest of two suspects, Rahul Anil Pawar and Yogita Bhosale. This operation is concentrated in Dhule, Jalgaon, and Buldhana districts. The trend, which gained popularity in late 2024 and early 2025, has drawn attention due to its potential links to organized crime and national security threats. The police have registered four First Information Reports (FIRs) against Instagram accounts promoting counterfeit currency, with two registered at the Nodal Cyber Police Station in Maharashtra and two at local police units. The authorities issued notices under the Information Technology Act for the removal of objectionable content and sought information on the account holders involved. A cybersecurity investigation by CloudSEK previously identified over 4,500 posts and 750 accounts engaged in selling counterfeit notes, highlighting the scale of the issue. The selling of FICN, often linked to illegal activities such as money laundering and terror financing, poses a significant threat to national security.
