Air India has announced an increase in fuel surcharges for both domestic and international flights, effective for new bookings. The domestic surcharge is now set at ₹399 per ticket, while international surcharges vary based on distance, ranging from approximately $10 (₹800+) for West Asia to $200 for North America and Australia. This change is driven by a significant rise in global jet fuel prices, which have nearly doubled from $99.40 per barrel at the end of February to $195.19 per barrel by the end of March 2026. The airline cites geopolitical tensions and global supply disruptions as key factors behind these price hikes, which account for nearly 40% of airline operating costs. Existing ticket holders are safe from these surcharges unless they alter their travel plans. This trend may not be isolated to Air India, as other airlines like IndiGo and Akasa are expected to implement similar charges, indicating that airfares could remain high for the foreseeable future.
