The Union environment ministry has granted approval for significant alterations to the Bandra-Versova Sea Link, a key infrastructure project in Mumbai, India. The redesign will increase the project's cost by 60%, raising it from ₹11,332.82 crore (approximately $1.36 billion USD) to ₹18,120.96 crore (around $2.18 billion USD). These changes include the removal of 1,799 mangroves, an increase from the earlier estimate of 1,585. The modifications, proposed by the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC), involve shifting three navigational spans at Juhu, reducing the number of lanes on two connectors, and extending one connector's length. The 9.89-km sea link, part of the larger Mumbai Coastal Road project, aims to cut travel time between Bandra and Versova from 45-60 minutes to just 10-15 minutes. Currently, the project is 30% complete, with completion anticipated by December 2028. Initially proposed in 2009, it has undergone several modifications and received coastal regulatory zone clearance recently.
