The Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (Mhada) has officially approved a consortium of Bhagirathi Housing Private Limited and Maathi Developers Private Limited to undertake the redevelopment of Kamathipura, a neighborhood in south Mumbai historically associated with the red light district. The approval, marked by the issuance of a Letter of Approval (LoA), allows the consortium to rehabilitate nearly 8,000 families currently residing in cramped conditions, transitioning them into newly constructed 500-square feet apartments. The project, which is anticipated to span seven years, will also feature four 50-storey buildings for rehabilitation and three 69-storey buildings intended for sale in the open market. Additionally, a four-lane elevated bridge along Bellasis Road will improve connectivity to the JJ flyover and Haji Ali junction. Mumbadevi MLA Amin Patel expressed satisfaction with the project's progress, emphasizing the significant improvement in living conditions for current residents. To further enhance the project's appeal, there are plans to rename Kamathipura to 'Upper Mumbai Central,' pending state government approval.
