The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) has launched its first canine unit specifically designed for fentanyl detection, marking a significant step in the fight against drug trafficking. Announced during an induction ceremony for 57 new officers at the CBSA College in Rigaud, Quebec, this initiative is part of a broader federal investment of $1.3 billion aimed at enhancing border security and modernizing detection tools. In 2025, the CBSA reported over 31,600 drug seizures involving fentanyl, underscoring the urgency of addressing this issue. Kevin Brosseau, Canada’s fentanyl czar, emphasized the need for a “relentless, multi-layered approach” to stop the flow of illegal drugs across the border. The new canine teams will complement the existing 80 detection dog teams already deployed at various ports of entry throughout Canada, reinforcing the country’s defenses against drug trafficking.
