In a bid to improve accountability, the Delhi government has ordered the installation of biometric attendance systems across all departments, requiring all employees, including Additional Chief Secretary, Principal Secretary, and secretaries, to report to work by 9:30 AM. This decision follows a surprise inspection by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, who found several senior officials absent from duty at the State GST office. The government will issue show-cause notices to those who were missing and will compile attendance records for the past month. Furthermore, the General Administration Department (GAD) will prepare daily attendance reports to be submitted to the Chief Secretary by noon. Gupta emphasized that discipline applies to all levels of the bureaucracy, stating that negligence will not be tolerated. However, some senior bureaucrats have criticized the directive, citing their demanding schedules filled with meetings and inspections, arguing that the requirement to punch in early may lead to earlier departures.
