India is set to integrate indigenously developed missiles into the 114 Rafale fighter jets it plans to purchase from France, as part of a ₹3.25 lakh crore ($39.2 billion USD) deal. The Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) cleared the proposal on February 12, which stipulates that 18 jets will be delivered in fly-away condition from France, while 96 jets will be manufactured in India with over 25% indigenous content. A key aspect of this deal is the insistence on an interface control document (ICD) that will define the integration protocols for the missiles. Despite concerns regarding the proprietary software codes that control critical systems of the Rafale jets, Indian defence officials confirmed that such codes are not shared with any third country, including close allies. While India is exploring indigenous development of its own fighter jets and missile systems, it has not made decisions on acquiring fifth-generation aircraft from either the United States or Russia.
