Residents in Gurugram, Haryana, India, have expressed outrage after the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) included a garbage collection tax in their March property tax bills, despite the absence of a functional door-to-door waste collection system. The tax, which ranges from ₹200 to ₹600, has sparked significant objections as many residents are already paying private vendors between ₹100 and ₹200 per month for waste disposal. Rajesh Gera, president of the Residents' Welfare Association (RWA) in Surya Vihar, highlighted that his community collectively pays around ₹25,000 monthly to private collectors. MCG officials have admitted that the tax is a result of a technical glitch and should currently be zero. Ravindra Yadav, additional commissioner of MCG, confirmed that the tax will only be applicable once a proper waste collection system is in place. Despite assurances, many residents have chosen to withhold payment until the issue is resolved. Earlier this year, a ₹325-crore tender for a five-year garbage collection project was approved but has faced delays due to administrative issues.
