The US government is set to automatically register eligible men for military draft by December 2026. The Selective Service System (SSS) proposed this rule change, which was approved by Congress as part of the 2026 National Defense Authorization Act. This new approach will utilize existing federal data to streamline the registration process, transferring the responsibility from individual men to the SSS. Currently, most males aged 18 to 25 are required to register, with penalties for non-compliance including fines of up to $250,000 or imprisonment for up to five years. Despite these penalties, registration rates have declined from 84% in 2023 to 81% in 2024. The proposed rule is under regulatory review before finalization. Notably, automatic registration is already practiced in 46 states when individuals apply for driver's licenses or state IDs, making this federal initiative a nationwide expansion of existing practices.
