In the first 11 months of the current financial year, the Pune division of Central Railway earned ₹210.49 crore from sugar freight, transporting 7.92 lakh tonnes of sugar across western Maharashtra. This revenue reflects a significant increase in rail cargo, driven by higher sugar production and a shift towards rail for bulk transport. The division also reported earnings from other sectors, including automobiles, which contributed ₹98.18 crore from transporting over 2.17 lakh tonnes. Petroleum products generated ₹37.15 crore from 6.44 lakh tonnes. The division's total freight handling included 1,441 rakes, with sugar factories in Kolhapur, Sangli, Satara, and Pune district increasingly opting for rail due to its cost efficiency and reliability. Officials noted that improvements in loading facilities and sustained engagement with industries have supported this growth, with further expansions planned to attract more freight.
