India's domestic liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) production has reached 60% of the country's requirement, providing significant relief as tensions in the Middle East disrupt global energy markets. In response to the ongoing conflict, authorities have facilitated the transition of over 400,000 consumers to piped natural gas (PNG) within the last five weeks, aiming to reduce reliance on LPG. Sujata Sharma, joint secretary in the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, reported that the expansion of PNG coverage is accelerating with support from state governments and Union Territories. Despite geopolitical volatility, officials assure that domestic LPG demand is being met adequately, with distributors holding sufficient stocks. Commercial LPG supplies have rebounded to nearly 70%, prioritizing essential services like hospitals and educational institutions. Additionally, the supply of 5 kg LPG cylinders has been doubled, easing documentation requirements to boost uptake. Authorities are also conducting over 2,400 awareness campaigns to improve consumer access to fuel options, ensuring that critical sectors receive uninterrupted supply.
