An unexpected detour by a research team from Delhi University led to the discovery of potential prehistoric rock art in Chaukhada village, located in Mirzapur district, Uttar Pradesh. The team, led by Prof Manoj Kumar Singh and researcher Sudeshna Biswas, documented several sandstone shelters approximately 2.5 km from the village. The rock art features red ochre paintings depicting human-like figures, animals, and scenes of group activities, suggesting a Mesolithic origin of around 14,000–10,000 years ago, although scientific verification is still pending. The site, situated in the Vindhyan range, is characterized by its conducive terrain for early human settlement, with similarities to rock art sites in Madhya Pradesh. However, researchers noted visible damage to the site, likely due to local activities, emphasizing the need for awareness about the fragility of these historical artworks. The team plans to approach the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) for further study and dating, with hopes that the site could enhance understanding of prehistoric cultures in the region.
