The Delhi government has commissioned a study by the Forest Research Institute in Dehradun to investigate the low survival rates of transplanted trees. The study aims to identify suitable species for transplantation and improve the existing Tree Transplantation Policy, 2020, which mandates an 80% survival rate for transplanted trees.
- 01The study will focus on improving the survival rate of transplanted trees in Delhi.
- 02It will assess factors such as species suitability, tree girth, and age.
- 03Currently, only 33.33% of transplanted trees have survived between 2019 and 2021.

The Delhi government has engaged the Forest Research Institute (FRI) in Dehradun to conduct a comprehensive study aimed at improving the survival rates of transplanted trees in the capital. The study, expected to take about a year, will analyze various factors affecting survival, including species suitability, tree girth, and age. This initiative arises from the Tree Transplantation Policy, 2020, which requires that at least 80% of felled trees must be transplanted, with a survival target of 80%. However, an affidavit submitted to the Delhi High Court revealed that only 33.33% of the 16,461 trees transplanted from 2019 to 2021 survived. Additionally, the Centre reported that nearly 43% of trees transplanted for the ₹20,000-crore Central Vista redevelopment project failed to survive. Delhi's Environment Minister, Manjinder Singh Sirsa, emphasized the need for a scientific approach and new technologies in the transplantation process.
