Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha of Jammu and Kashmir has initiated a magisterial probe into the controversial killing of Rashid Ahmad Mughal, a 29-year-old commerce graduate, during an Army encounter in Ganderbal between March 31 and April 1. Mughal's family asserts that he was innocent and had no connections to militancy, prompting them to file a formal complaint with local police. In response to the family's demands for justice, Sinha's order calls for a thorough and impartial inquiry to be conducted within seven days. The Ganderbal district magistrate has been tasked with overseeing the investigation, which will also look into the circumstances surrounding Mughal's death. Political figures, including Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and PDP leader Mehbooba Mufti, have expressed support for the inquiry, emphasizing the need for accountability in such incidents. The J&K Police has acknowledged the family's complaint and will include it in the ongoing investigation.
