IIT Bombay has launched a pioneering initiative called Translational Research Yielding Solutions for Tomorrow (TRYST) to convert laboratory innovations into commercially viable products. Scheduled to be operational in early 2026, TRYST addresses the common issue of promising technologies being abandoned after the proof of concept stage due to a lack of structured support. Professor Milind Atrey emphasized the need for a mechanism to ensure these innovations reach the market. TRYST will operate like a corporate entity, led by CEO Jitendra Balakrishnan, who has a strong background in technology and research. The company will enhance the Technology Readiness Level (TRL) of innovations, moving them from initial proof of concept to market-ready products through rigorous testing and design refinement. Unlike traditional academic research, which can take years, TRYST aims to deliver solutions within six months to a year. The initiative will also engage with industries to better understand their needs, fostering a quicker response to challenges. Ultimately, TRYST plans to license technologies to industry partners or support the creation of startups around these innovations, ensuring broader access to new solutions.
