In a pioneering effort, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay has launched a new entity called Translational Research Yielding Solutions for Tomorrow (TRYST) to accelerate the commercialization of early-stage technologies developed on campus. This initiative is designed to identify promising yet dormant innovations and transform them into market-ready products within a strict timeline of six months to a year. Professor Milind Atrey, deputy director at IIT Bombay, emphasized the need for application-oriented research, stating that many technologies stall at the proof-of-concept stage due to various challenges. TRYST will evaluate industry demand and refine these technologies for practical use, either by licensing them to companies or supporting faculty in launching startups. The initiative aims to centralize project execution, freeing faculty from administrative burdens and allowing them to focus on research. Revenue generated through licensing or industry partnerships will be shared with the innovators, ensuring that the benefits of their work are recognized and rewarded.
