The Congress party has strongly condemned Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma following a police visit to Pawan Khera's residence in New Delhi. The police inquiry is linked to allegations made by Khera against Sarma and his family, which the Congress describes as a politically motivated witch hunt aimed at suppressing dissent. Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh stated that the police presence indicates Sarma is 'disturbed, desperate, and rattled,' and accused him of using state resources to silence opposition voices. Khera had previously claimed that Sarma's wife possesses passports from three countries and has hidden overseas assets, allegations that Sarma has categorically denied as malicious fabrications. With the Assam elections approaching on April 9, the Congress has also filed a complaint with the Election Commission, demanding the cancellation of Sarma's nomination due to alleged omissions in his poll affidavit regarding his wife's assets.
