The Delhi Jal Board (DJB) has initiated discussions with Haryana's irrigation department to purchase additional raw water to address the growing demand during the summer months. Currently, Delhi's water demand is estimated at 1,250 million gallons per day (MGD), with a projected peak supply of 1,002 MGD, resulting in a 248 MGD demand-supply gap. To mitigate this, the DJB is requesting 51 cusecs of irrigation water to be redirected for drinking purposes and is proposing to buy an additional 100 cusecs of water. This additional supply is crucial for operationalizing two new water treatment plants, located in Dwarka Phase-2 and Chandrawal, which are nearing completion but cannot function without adequate raw water. The DJB is willing to pay ₹71 per 2,500 cubic feet for the extra water. Furthermore, the DJB plans to reduce water loss from the Delhi Sub-Branch canal by proposing to concrete-line the canal base, although Haryana has expressed interest in claiming water savings from this project.
