Mayawati, the chief of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), has advocated for a separate quota for women from Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST), and Other Backward Classes (OBC) within the proposed 33% reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies. During a media interaction in Lucknow, she highlighted that without such a provision, the primary goal of women's reservation would be largely negated. Mayawati welcomed the Centre's initiative to advance women's reservation but expressed skepticism about whether women from marginalized communities would benefit fully without a dedicated sub-quota. She criticized the lack of political will and intent to implement women's empowerment effectively, pointing out that women continue to face violence and injustice. Furthermore, she called out the Congress party for previously ignoring the demand for sub-quotas, despite the contributions of B.R. Ambedkar towards ensuring equality and dignity for women. Mayawati urged that the issue of women's reservation should transcend party politics and be implemented promptly to foster improvements in women's conditions across the country.
