The government of Ladakh is set to honor the late Colonel Sonam Wangchuk by dedicating a memorial in Leh, following his recent passing at the age of 61. Wangchuk, known as the 'Lion of Ladakh,' was a celebrated Kargil War hero and recipient of the Mahavir Chakra, one of India's highest military honors. He died from a heart attack at his home in Leh. During the 1999 Kargil War, he led troops from the Ladakh Scouts in a critical mission to secure the Chorbat La area along the Line of Control with Pakistan. His leadership and bravery were pivotal in eliminating enemy forces and capturing strategic positions, earning him a distinguished place in Indian military history. The memorial will serve as a lasting tribute to his valor and is being developed in consultation with his family and local representatives, ensuring that his legacy continues to inspire future generations.
