In a bid to enhance its pre-monsoon preparations, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has implemented a digital monitoring tool for its annual desilting operations. This initiative includes fitting GPS trackers to contractors' dumpsters, enabling the BMC to digitally oversee the entire process of desilting Mumbai’s extensive 911-km-long storm-water drain network and ensure that waste is disposed of at designated sites through geo-fencing technology. Currently, the BMC's dashboard indicates that 98,502.36 tonnes of silt have been cleared, representing only 14% of the 841,799.07-tonne target. The desilting of the Mithi River has just begun, with a mere 1% of its target achieved, largely due to contractor disinterest. To ensure accountability, contractors are now required to upload videos of their work, monitored by AI to identify malpractices. Additionally, the BMC has prepared 547 dewatering pumps for flood-prone areas, emphasizing the importance of proper drain maintenance to prevent flooding during the monsoon season.
