Residents of Malabar Hill, a neighborhood in Mumbai, met with local MLA Mangal Prabhat Lodha and civic officials to express their opposition to a proposed 52-million-litre water reservoir in the Hanging Gardens. The residents voiced concerns regarding the potential loss of green cover and the estimated cost of the project, which ranges from ₹700 to ₹1,000 crore (approximately $84 to $120 million USD). Lodha highlighted that the original plan, which involved demolishing large portions of the garden, has been revised to significantly reduce tree loss from 389 trees to 79. He urged residents to consider the updated proposal, which aims to improve water infrastructure in the area. However, Additional Municipal Commissioner Abhijit Bangar explained that repairing the existing reservoir would disturb the Hanging Gardens, making the construction of a new tank necessary. Despite attempts to accommodate residents' feedback over the past 18 months, concerns remain, prompting residents to seek intervention from Municipal Commissioner Ashwini Bhide.
