The All India LPG Distributors Federation (North West Region) has condemned the Indian government's recent mandate requiring consumers to switch from liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) to piped natural gas (PNG) within three months. During a meeting in Karnal, representatives from Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu, Kashmir, Ladakh, and Chandigarh discussed the adverse effects of this mandate, labeling it as 'unjust' and advocating for voluntary adoption instead. The federation expressed concerns about the government's restrictions on LPG supply, which have increased workloads for distributors and caused panic among consumers. The new regulations also impose compulsory e-KYC for refill deliveries and limit LPG supply to commercial sectors, exacerbating the situation. State president Satinder Singh highlighted that the differentiation in booking intervals for urban and rural consumers has led to confusion and panic booking, causing significant disruptions in service. He warned that the forced transition to PNG could result in widespread job losses among LPG distributors and increased costs for consumers, potentially leading to a monopoly by PNG operators.
