On Saturday, Irrigation and Flood Control Minister Parvesh Verma launched two dual-purpose machines at Najafgarh drain, one of the major sources of pollution for the Yamuna River in Delhi, India. These weed harvester and trash skimmer machines are designed to remove floating waste, invasive aquatic weeds, and untreated discharge before they can enter the river. The machines, equipped with a 112 horsepower engine and a storage capacity of 14 cubic metres, will enhance the cleaning process and help improve water flow, thereby reducing waterlogging during heavy rains. The total cost for procuring these machines was ₹2.90 crore (approximately $350,000 USD). This initiative aligns with the Swachh Bharat mission, focusing on cleanliness and environmental sustainability, while also strengthening flood preparedness ahead of the monsoon season.
